The Honorable _______________________
Iowa Senate
Des Moines, IA

Dear Senator _________________,

I am a __________ teacher in __________________, Iowa.  I am writing out of concern for the future of foreign language in ______________ public schools.  We need to do more to make foreign language a vital part of every child’s education.  Students studying language at the college/university level should study for at least three or four years in high school, not the two years that are currently required. There should also be incentives for those students to continue their language studies at the university level.

We owe it to our children to prepare them for the 21st century.  The world is becoming increasingly smaller, so that knowledge of other languages and cultures is vital to the United States’ survival both politically and economically.  Studying a foreign language gives all members of our society the opportunity to compete in a global economy. In other countries, it is common for citizens to speak two or three languages.  The United States is falling behind the rest of the world by not making foreign language a priority.

Please contact me if I can be of any help as you discuss the much needed funding in the area of foreign languages in our schools and universities.

Sincerely,
